Earlier this week, Cycle for Survival, announced they had hit an incredible fundraising milestone… $100 million dollars! Cycle for Survival is a nationwide event, almost a movement, hosted by Equinox in partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. It was founded by Jennifer Goodman Linn in 2007—a Memorial Sloan Kettering patient and Equinox member—and her husband, Dave, following Jen’s own rare cancer diagnosis. They wanted to do something to fight back. Despite losing her battle with cancer in 2011, Jen continues to inspire to this day. From the $250,000 raised in its first year, to $25 million in 2015, Cycle for Survival is one of the fastest-growing fundraising events – directly funding clinical trials and research studies for rare cancers that include brain, pancreatic, ovarian, thyroid, leukemia and lymphoma, among many others.
The Cycle for Survival rides take place at Equinox locations in over 20 cities across the country, with multiple rides in each. Teams of riders participate in 4 consecutive 50-minute spin classes, seeking donations in support for this cycling marathon. There are national teams as well, with riders participating in more than just one event. To look at the leaderboard of fundraising totals for these National Teams is pretty inspiring in itself… $334,104 for Team Perry, $263,669 for JP Morgan Chase, $239,005 for Pedaling Sunshine. I myself am participating this year for the first time on March 12th, as a member of SoulCycle master instructor Stacey Griffith’s team, Stacey’s Crew. One of the things that has been so impressive to me so far is how many people you ask for donations say they are also participating in a Cycle for Survival ride.
So this post is seeking donations for our team or any other team who might inspire you to give. $10, $25, $50, $100 or more… as I always say, there is no such thing as a small donation. Just give something… what you’d spend on a latte, bottle of wine, or nice dinner with friends. Or give a whole lot! You’ll feel good and won’t have to ride a bike for almost 4 hours! I’ll report back next week after my first Cycle for Survival ride!
